Ohhio.me runs on honest, independent casino reviews — and like every website, it uses cookies to do that properly. This page explains exactly which cookies land on your device, why they’re there, and what you can do about them. No legalese, no runaround.
What a cookie actually is
A cookie is a small text file your browser saves when you visit a site. It can’t run programs, can’t access anything else on your device, and isn’t the same as tracking software. Think of it as a sticky note the site leaves so it remembers something useful — like which page you came from, or whether you’ve already dismissed a notice.
The three types of cookies ohhio.me uses
We keep our cookie footprint deliberately small. Here’s a plain-English breakdown of what’s running and why.
- Essential & Functional Cookies
- These keep the site working — security tokens, session state, consent preferences. You can’t meaningfully disable them without breaking navigation. No personal data leaves your device through these.
- Analytics Cookies (Google Analytics 4)
- GA4 tells us which reviews get read, how long people stay, and where traffic comes from. IP addresses are anonymised at the point of collection. The data helps us prioritise better guides and drop content nobody needs.
- Affiliate Tracking Cookies
- When you click a casino or sportsbook link on ohhio.me, a cookie records that referral. If you later sign up, we receive a commission from the operator — at zero cost to you. This revenue is what allows ohhio.me to remain free, editorially independent, and paywalled by nothing.
How affiliate tracking actually works
Our casino links contain a unique referral code. When you click one, the operator’s platform sets a first-party cookie on their domain (not ours) that ties your session to ohhio.me’s affiliate account. If you register and qualify under that operator’s terms, they pay us a commission. The data that flows is: referral source ID, click timestamp, and — after sign-up — a confirmation that a qualifying action occurred. We never receive your name, email, payment details, or any account information from the operator. The relationship is strictly merchant-to-affiliate, governed by each operator’s own privacy policy.
Your options for managing cookies
Every major browser lets you view, block, or delete cookies. The guides at aboutcookies.org walk through the exact steps for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. You can also opt out of Google Analytics measurement specifically via the GA Opt-out Browser Add-on.
One honest note: if you disable affiliate tracking cookies, referrals from ohhio.me to operators will go unrecorded and we won’t earn a commission. That doesn’t affect your experience with the casino — but it does affect ours.
Do Not Track signals
Some browsers send a DNT header requesting that sites disable tracking. Ohhio.me does not currently alter its cookie behaviour in response to DNT signals, because there is no consistent industry or legal standard defining exactly what a DNT request requires. We’ll revise this stance if a workable standard is adopted. In the meantime, your most reliable option is the browser-level controls described above.
Updates to this policy
If we add new cookie types or change how existing ones work, this page will be updated with a revised date. Continued use of ohhio.me after a material change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
